Tips for Buying Silk Comforters

The rising demand for a better quality of sleep has given rise to a demand for high-quality beddings, such as great comforters or sheets. In this section, I am going to introduce to you several tips for choosing high-quality and suitable silk comforters.

Silk vs Down Comforter Comparison

What Are Silk Comforters

Silk comforter is those comforters that are made of 100% silk floss. It usually comes in two kinds: one is with silk case/cove, while the other is with a cotton case.

Silk Shell or Cotton Shell?

When shopping for silk comforters, you may come across those terms: silk comforter with silk shell or silk comforter with a cotton shell. So, what are those and which is better?

To be clear, both of them are filled with 100% silk. The biggest distinction lies in their case or cover. The silk comforter with a silk shell, or called silk-covered comforter is the one with silk case covered on the silk floss. In comparison, the outer shell of a silk comforter with cotton shell, also called cotton-covered comforter, is composed of cotton.

You can enjoy silk benefits from either one of these. You can pick a cotton-covered silk comforter if budget is a huge factor or you do not want the comforter to move around a lot on your bed. Silk-covered silk comforter, meanwhile, would be an ideal choice if you would like to experience a completely silky dream and the price is not an issue.

Should You for Handmade or Machine?

I would definitely suggest handmade silk comforter for the following reasons:

Handmade silk comforters are filled using long fiber Silk. The silk floss is:

  • Layered in a grid pattern.
  • Tacked, not boxed stitched.
  • No lumps caused by silk filling clumping up.

Machine silk comforters are filled with short fibers that are:

  • Stuffed, not layered into a casing.
  • Box stitched, which damages the silk fiber and creates cold spots throughout the comforter, undermining a silk comforter’s heat-regulating ability.

Do You Need a Cover For Your Silk Comforter?

Yes, most definitely. You should always safeguard your comforter with a cover to keep dust or damage that is caused by unexpected factors.

What is the Best Type of Silk Comforters?

It goes without saying that 100% silk should always your first choice especially when it comes to the silk floss. Only the cocoons of silkworm can be unraveled to make spindles of single-strand silk threads, resulting in long-stranded silk fiber.

Is OEKO-Certification Important?

Yes! The OEKO certification is the most trusted authority for quality inspection in the home and textile field. The test label, therefore, is a significant decision-making tool when you are out shopping for bed linen.

Guide to Buying Down Comforters

While down offers you warmth during the more frigid seasons of the year, it is also popular for the breathable, lightweight and natural elements that make it a fine choice for the use all year round. And rest assured, these would also be suitable with your best down pillows. So, if you are considering buying a down comforter, there are some crucial matters that you need to be made aware of before making your purchase.

What Are the Differences Between Silk and Down Duvets

Down comforters may differ from one another depending on their price points and styles. You can go for a top-of-the-line goose down comforter or a polyester-filled one. Whatever kind of down comforter you end up with, it is very important that you take note of the most fundamental things that you need to consider before making a purchase. Here are some guidelines that you need to bear in mind when you are shopping for a down comforter:

Types of the Best Down Comforters

Down refers to a bird’s undercoat that is utilized for its lightweight and ultra-soft quality. Set side by side to an actual bird’s feather, down doesn’t have brittle and hard quills nor does it have stiff and flat shape either.

  • This is the most preferred kind of down comforter used by a lot of families these days and it often comes available in a mixture of gray and white goose down. Essentially, the color of the down has nothing to do with the quality. Many people like to buy white goose down because it does not show through the white shells of the comforter.
  • Many producers of down comforter all around the world favor using goose down but there are also those that make down comforters using duck down. However, comforters that are made from duck down are usually found in the low-end category.
  • Choices and preferences differ from one person to another and this proves to be true when picking a down comforter. There are those who do not like using down-filled comforters so they often go for the ones that have alternative materials. With such selections, you can still get the down properties to achieve comfort and hypoallergenic quality.

The Fill Power

Fill power signifies how an ounce of down is measured in relation to a particular amount of space it takes up. Ideally, fill power comforters can be found in the higher end category of down comforters. If a down comforter has a high level of fill power, then this often means it features better insulation, loft, and fluffiness. By way of fill power, you can easily say whether or not a down comforter is of high quality and warmth or not. The following are the different kinds of down comforters according to their fill power:

  • Up to 400 = lightweight, warm and soft
  • 400 to 599 = gives you warmth the whole year round
  • 600 – 799 = a warmer choice that exudes lightweight quality
  • 800 and above = delivers the highest insulation for the winter season

The Thread Count

Like any other bedding and comfort sheets, a higher thread count commonly means a much softer quality because of their tightly weaved characteristic. When it comes to down comforters, tighter weave due to higher thread count defines how it holds the down fill well in order to last you a longer period of time.

In order to attain high-quality thread count, it is crucial for you to make sure that there should be a proper balance between the thread count and the weave. You need to bear in mind that a high thread count can also be a great indicator of poor quality fabric and inferior weave construction.

The Different Types of Construction

When looking for a down comforter, just taking a close look at its style should not be the only thing that you need to train your attention on. You also need to contemplate the stitching styles and construction of the comforter. The following are the different types of down comforter construction:

  1. Baffle Box – This kind of comforter exudes fabric strips known as baffles. They are often sewn and attached between the bottom and top layers of a comforter, which results in compartments or rooms for the fill. The walls of the baffle allow for full expansion of the down to achieve the highest level of fluffiness and maximum cushion.
  2. Walls are made around the comforter’s outer edge, connecting the bottom and top layers. Maximum loft and fluffiness are achieved with the added height of the edges. Gusset comforters can either be constructed using sewn-through or baffle box method. However, a gusseted comforter usually comes in baffle box or box stitch.
  3. Diamond Quilted – The bottom and top layers of a comforter are sewn and attached together, with the use of a diamond pattern. With this, fill shifting is eliminated.
  4. Karo Step – To diminish the shifting of fill, a comforter should have open compartments. This is something that you can get from a Karo Step comforter. When open compartments are present in a comforter, free movement of the fill is allowed. This is often made in a baffled or sewn-through style.
  5. Sewn Through Box Stitch – The bottom and top layers of the comforter are sewn together with the use of a box pattern to get rid of fill shifting.
  6. Sewn Through Channel Stitch – The bottom and top layers of the comforter are sewn and attached together in vertical and horizontal rows. This allows free movement of the comforter’s fill.
  7. Ring Stitch – The comforter’s bottom and top layers are sewn together in small circles. This is similar to the Karo Step that allows the comforter’s fill to move around.

The Benefit of Using Down Comforters

Possessing a down comforter and the best memory foam mattresses would really make your sleep more comfortable. Here are some other benefits that you can enjoy with a down comforter:

  • The warmth that you get from the comforter is unparalleled. This is because a down comforter has the ability to keep body heat within its filling.
  • A down comforter also works just as great even during the summer season. A down comforter features breathability that lets moisture and sweat to pass through its filling. This makes for a fine choice for warm sleepers who are looking for comforters that won’t allow them to overheat.
  • A down comforter is often made from lightweight materials that let you make and set your bed fairly easily during the night and in the morning, providing you comfort even in the coldest months of the year.
  • A down comforter does not need high maintenance. As a matter of fact, it only needs to be washed two to three times every year.

Silk vs. Down Comforter Comparison

Pros and Cons of Silk and Down

Let’s make a quick appraisal between silk and down comforters:

1. Price

Prices for down comforters roughly range between $250-$350 on Amazon and $250-$400 for silk comforters. On more dedicated online shops, the pricing of both down and silk comforters can greatly differ, going straight up to the 4-digit range. Overall, pricing for both types of comforters is identical in nature.

2. Warmth

Down comforters keep all heat emanated by your body inside because air pockets created by down feathers inside the comforter are stationary. This makes down comforters great especially if your bedroom is very cold during winter. However, if your room is not air-conditioned, sleeping in a down comforter will cause you to sweat profusely after a particular period of time passes due to the temperature inside the comforter keeps rising up.

Silk comforters are thinner and more breathable because of the mesh structure of the filling, so in general, they tend to be a bit “cooler.” Of course, for a judiciously air-conditioned space, silk comforters will fare better since it will regulate temperature around your body naturally by allowing excessive heat to escape. This is the reason why silk comforters can be utilized in a variety of temperatures all through the year while down comforters are generally used for winter.

3. Comfort and Sleep Quality

Down Comforters

  • Down comforters are fairly heavy compared to silk comforters, which means sleepers have a more difficult time moving around while in a down comforter and have more restricted blood flow around the body.
  • Down comforters are toasty, although, at times, too warm which results in excessive perspiration. If the shell of the comforter/duvet cover is not made of a material that features great moisture wicking capabilities, sweating too much creates a damp sleeping environment which, you should all know by now, is not very comfortable. Sweating too much also causes dehydration that may bother your sleep, and leave you feeling more tired in the morning.
  • Down comforters are fairly rigid and need to be tucked in around the shoulders to keep warm. This needs to be done on a consistent basis all through the night. Failure to do so makes the stomach area warm but shoulders cold, which causes your nervous system to be unable to rest.
  • Most down comforters keep their filling distributed evenly by sewing equal portions of down feathers in different pockets in the comforter. However, lower quality down comforters has the issue of cold spots because even within the smaller pockets the down feathers can still “bunch up” and make a denser cluster that occupies just a section of the pocket instead of spreading all throughout. This makes an area that is completely uncovered through which heat escapes freely. Obviously, this is not ideal for insulation.

Silk

  • Silk comforters are light and sleeping in a silk comforter can be very relaxing. However, for a restless sleeper, silk comforters tend to get pushed off the bed fairly often.
  • Silk comforters work great as temperature regulators as well as great moisture wickers, which means that you will rest at an ideal temperature all through the night. Even if you are the type that sweats a lot, the comforter will help eliminate excess moisture and keep the environment adequately dry.
  • Silk comforters are soft which means they drape naturally over the contours of your body no matter how you often you move around. Your body will be amply protected from the cold and no partially-cold-partially-hot feelings will happen.
  • Silk comforters’ fillings are sheet-like and evenly distributed when it comes to thickness. The sides of the filling are usually tacked on the edge of the comforter shell, which forces the filling to stay still, so there will be no cold spots.

4. Maintenance

Down comforters usually use a cotton shell that needs to be washed often, since cotton is not all too resistant to mold, bacteria and dust mites. However, down comforters are best washed with dry cleaning, which means that maintaining a down comforter well is not only expensive but also time-consuming. The overheating issue of down comforters further complicates this problem since more sweat tends to result in the easier formation of molding spots.

Silk comforters, on the other hand, are also not water-washable. However, compared to down comforters, silk is anti-bacterial, anti-mold and anti-acarid, which means that apart from airing your comforters once in a while to eliminate any residual moisture in the filling, a silk comforter doesn’t need to be dry cleaned as much. In addition, since silk comforters can be used throughout the year and are thinner than down comforters, you do not need to be worried about putting the comforter away or look for extra storage space.

So, to give you a recap of the pros and cons of a silk comforter and a down duvet here’s a useful list that you can refer to when you are out shopping for one:
